Smokey Bear Days started in 2004 by a group of dedicated volunteers to celebrate the 60th birthday of Smokey Bear, the poster and to remember the rescue of Capitan’s favorite bear “Smokey”. Smokey the “Living Symbol” was found May 9th during the Capitan Gap fire in 1950. Smokey’s message continues to warn people of the dangers of careless human caused wildfires.
Smokey Bear Days mission is to promote Smokey Bear’s fire prevention message to children and adults of all ages by educating visitors to the Capitan area about the dangers of unwanted, human caused wildfires.
Smokey Bear Days vision is a village where individuals, agencies and organizations work collaboratively on wildfire prevention issues ensuring the reduction of catastrophic wildfires.
Smokey Bear Days Goals:
v Provide individuals with the knowledge to be responsible with fire while working or recreating outdoors.
v Utilize the event as a mechanism to promote wildfire prevention, Smokey Bear Historical Park, Smokey Bear’s grave, the village of Capitan and area attractions.
v Continue to develop a fun and educational event that will encourage area visitors to return to the Village of Capitan.
